New Lane aka Lorong Baru is a 250 meter stretch of road connecting Jalan Macalister and Jalan Irving. Come 16:00 every day, Georgetown’s Lorong Baru closes down to vehicular traffic, with cars required to find alternate routes to their destination because the street turns into a thriving outdoor hawker food center. All in there are more than 20 mobile stalls and together with tens of permanent hawker's stalls operating from the coffee shops in the vicinity, there is a substantial variety of hawker's food to choose from. It would not be exaggerating to say that every type of Penang hawker's food you can think of, you can find it right here!
Expect to sit on colorful plastic tables and chairs on the roadside. Be spoiled with a variety of local favorites; char koay teow, char koay kak, staty, charcoal grilled chicken wings, popiah to name a few all in, which makes for a filling, hearty meal. Flavored with a variety of side dishes, anything from fresh seafood to oyster omelette and loh bak, this is basically Penangites comfort food.
